A Winter Kiss on Rochester Mews by Annie Darling

A Winter Kiss on Rochester MewsA Winter Kiss on Rochester Mews by Annie Darling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

But on Rochester Mews, two unlikely lovebirds are struggling to find their festive cheer.

Star baker Mattie has hated Christmas ever since she had her heart broken on Christmas Eve. The only thing she hates more is the insufferable Tom, who has rubbed her up the wrong way since she started running the tearoom next door to his bookshop. So when Mattie and Tom are left in charge in the frantic festive days before Christmas, it might be cold outside but things are sure to heat up.

Can a bookshop full of romantic novels, a life-sized reindeer and a mistletoe kissing booth persuade two scrooges to fall in love with Christmas… and each other?

Romantic heart-warming rom-coms don't come a lot better than this one. Funny, poignant, good likeable characters and a real feel good factor at the end. Mattie Smith a successful patisserie chef has been running the café in London since she left Paris when her heart was broken at Christmas. She hates Christmas and the endless season of good will, she has no time for men in her life and always wears depressing black outfits. Next comes Tom, and academic who has worked in the bookshop part of the business called 'Happy Ever After'. Tom appears to be as dull as dishwater, dresses much to old for his age and is aloof and stand offish.

When the flat above the premises becomes vacant Mattie and Tom find themselves flatmates. The novel expands the personalities of both these characters and the sub characters who are just as interesting but all together they work well in this story. Through various trials and tribulations we get our happy every after ending.

It's all you could want from a romantic rom-com and is well written although at times a little frustrating as is always the case with these novels. If you want to have a romantic escapist afternoon or two this is just the medicine you need. Perfect festive reading with plenty of comic moments and a satisfying conclusion. 4 stars

Some Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher

Some Kind of WonderfulSome Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Happiness can be found where you least expect it . . .

When the love of your life says you're not The One, what next?

After celebrating a decade together, everyone thinks Lizzy and Ian are about to get engaged.

Instead, a romantic escape to Dubai leaves Lizzy with no ring, no fiancé and no future.

Lizzy is heartbroken - but through the tears, she sees an opportunity. This is her moment to discover what she's been missing while playing Ian's 'better half'.

But how much has Ian changed her, and who is she without him?

Lizzy sets out to rediscover the girl she was before - and, in the meantime, have a little fun . . .

This was my first book I have read by Giovanna Fletcher. I didn't know really what to expect, I was hoping for a good chick lit novel.

In this story we follow Lizzie, she has been with her boyfriend for many years and is desperate to get married, when she gets whisked away on a romantic break to Dubai, she is sure that finally he is going to pop the question. The trip is almost over and so far no sign of a romantic proposal, after one final night she returns home without a boyfriend and her whole life is about to change.

She begins to gradually rebuild herself, this is a chance for a fresh start and although hard Lizzie has decided she needs to move on with her life and try and make the best of it.

I really liked the beginning part of the story and thought it was everything I was looking for, however I must admit I started to get a little lost and bored towards the middle, it felt like it wasn't going anywhere. I was a bit disappointed as it had such promise but I was unable to enjoy it again as much as I had initially.

The Sun in Her Eyes by Paige Toon

The Sun in Her EyesThe Sun in Her Eyes by Paige Toon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Blinding sunshine… A bend in the road… What became of the little girl with the sun in her eyes?

Amber was three when a car crash stole her mother's life. She doesn't remember the accident, but a stranger at the scene has been unable to forget. Now, almost thirty years later, she's trying to track Amber down.

Amber, meanwhile, is married to Ned and living on the other side of the world in London. When her father has a stroke, she flies straight home to Australia to be with him. Away from her husband, Amber finds comfort in her oldest friends, but her feelings for Ethan, the gorgeous, green-eyed man she once fell for, have never been platonic.

As Ethan and Amber grow closer, married life in London feels far away. Then Amber receives a letter that changes everything. 'Before your mother died, she asked me to tell you something…'

Paige Toon is one of my favourite authors and I always get excited when I hear she has a new one coming out.

Amber is heading off to Australia, her dad has just had a stroke, which has prompted her to go, but being made redundant has also helped, she needs to get away. Her husband, Ned has just been promoted and is unable to go with her. Amber believes his boss only promoted him as she fancies him and now they will get more time together abroad on conferences this plays on her mind.

It doesn't take long when Amber is back in her childhood home to get swept along in her old life with her teenage friends. Ethan used to be her best friend, they drifted apart and he married Sadie, Amber has never liked her but they have two girls together and she is pleased for him.

There were parts of this book, where I didn't agree with Amber's actions and I was actually disappointed with parts of the novel. It didn't sit well with me and I feel the 'big reveal' from the letter Amber received was a little bit of a let down, Paige could have made so much more from her mothers final words.

This is an enjoyable read, one that is great for holiday around by the pool. This was not my favourite novel by Paige, however it will still be added to my collection on my bookshelf and if like me, Pairge is one of your favourite authors I recommend you read this one.

The Second Love of My Life by Victoria Walters

The Second Love of My LifeThe Second Love of My Life by Victoria Walters
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

In the Cornish town of Talting, everyone is famous for something.

Until recently Rose was known for many things: her infectious positivity; her unique artistic talent; and her devotion to childhood sweetheart Lucas.

But two years ago that changed in one unthinkable moment. Now, Rose is known for being the young woman who became a widow aged just twenty-four.

Though Rose knows that life must go on, the thought of carving out a new future for herself is one she can barely entertain. Until a newcomer, Robert, arrives in Talting for the summer...

Can Rose allow herself the chance to love again?

Get lost in Victoria Walters' immensely touching debut novel, and discover a world that will capture your imagination and heart.

Not a great novel from my point of view. Its about a woman called Rose who loses the love of her life Lucas in an accident. She know that she must go on but she's not sure she knows how. It is a typical fairy story with fairly tangible characters and a somewhat emotionally charged story line but it didn't really gel with me.

It was very predictable and lacked substance with no curve balls to keep the interest going. I did get a bit bored and confess to having skim read a lot of the book looking for something exciting to happen but it didn't.

I suppose it is an adequate holiday read but nothing exceptional and instantly forgettable. Sorry I can only give this 2 star rating.

Someone to Love by Mary Balogh

Someone to Love (Westcott, #1)Someone to Love by Mary Balogh
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Humphrey Wescott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a fortune that will forever alter the lives of everyone in his family - including the daughter no one knew he had . . .

Anna Snow grew up in an orphanage in Bath knowing nothing of the family she came from. Now she discovers that the late Earl of Riverdale was her father and that she has inherited his fortune. She is also overjoyed to learn she has siblings. However, they want nothing to do with her or her attempts to share her new wealth. But the new earl's guardian is interested in Anna . . .

Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby, keeps others at a distance. Yet something prompts him to aid Anna in her transition from orphan to lady. As London society and her newfound relatives threaten to overwhelm Anna, Avery steps in to rescue her and finds himself vulnerable to feelings and desires he has hidden so well and for so long.

This the the first Mary Balogh novel I have read, I thought it was a romantic novel that didn't really seem to get going and its lack of pace made it hard to keep reading. It has been likened to a Cinderella novel which I do somewhat agree with. I'm not a huge fan of historical novels so my review is a bit affected by this although it was charming in places and had reasonably convincing characters but it just didn't have the wow factor for me. I have read better historical novels so if I compare with ones' I have read then the star rating I would give for this one would be a 2 stars. Sorry to all Mary Balogh fans and please don't be put off reading it on the strength of this review. It did have some lovely descriptive passages and was well written despite my opinion.

Another Heartbeat in the House by Kate Beaufoy

Another Heartbeat in the HouseAnother Heartbeat in the House by Kate Beaufoy
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Two women living a hundred years apart. One home that binds them together.

When Edie Chadwick travels to Ireland to close up her uncle’s lakeside lodge, it’s as much to escape the burden of guilt she’s carrying as to break loose from the smart set of 1930’s London.

The old house is full of memories – not just her own, but those of a woman whose story has been left to gather dust in a chest in the attic: a handwritten memoir inscribed with an elegant signature . . . Eliza Drury

As she turns the pages of the manuscript, Edie uncovers secrets she could never have imagined: an exciting tale of ambition, hardship, love and tragedy – a story that has waited a lifetime to be told. . .

Edie Chadwick works in publishing reading manuscripts for writers while waiting to discover the next block buster she becomes bored and needs a change. Her Uncle needs help closing one of his properties in Ireland and she offers to help eager to escape the boredom of her life.

While helping him to clear the house she finds a diary of someone called Eliza Drury written almost 100 years ago. Like Edie Eliza had also set out on a journey to Ireland in an attempt to change her fortunes for the better and as Edie continues to clear the house she comes across more secrets about Eliza.

The problem I had with this is that it was a 'dual time' book and in order for this to really work it has to have sufficient mystery to keep the reader going which I didn't find with this story. It was disappointing and just a bit boring with no real twists or reveals to want me to carry on. I did read to the end but it was skim read. Only 2 stars from me for this one.

Acts of Love by Talulah Riley

Acts of LoveActs of Love by Talulah Riley
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Bernadette knows what she wants.

Tim is perfect, and she's always had a feeling that something is about to happen between them.

He might have just announced his engagement to the sickeningly wonderful Elizabeth, but the ring's not on his finger yet.

And when Elizabeth starts meddling in Bernie's own love life, she knows it's time to act.

Yes, Elizabeth's best friend Radley might be charming, charismatic and intelligent.

But he's not Tim.

And Bernadette's not a woman who takes no for an answer.

I didn't like this one at all. Usual chick lit/modern romance nonsense set in LA with an English heroine, billionaire male character and unrequited love. Way too long with none of the mystique and mastery of Gone with the Wind to which it has been compared. Simple lack lustre plot line, simpering self indulgent characters and a completely uninteresting and boring story line. Nothing like the superb Mitchell novel that it is being compared with. To my mind this novel is just mushy nonsense with no originality or creativity. I couldn't be bothered to read to the end I'm afraid and although I have been harsher with this review it is because you'd have to be brilliant to be compared to the timeless novel that Margaret Mitchell produced and this certainly wasn't even close. Sorry this only gets 1 star from me.

The Last Piece of My Heart by Paige Toon

The Last Piece of My HeartThe Last Piece of My Heart by Paige Toon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When life feels like a puzzle, sometimes it’s the small pieces that make up the bigger picture ... Join Bridget on a journey to put her world back together.

Meet Bridget, a successful travel journalist with ambitions to turn her quirky relationship blog into a novel. But, after numerous rejections from publishers, she accepts an alternative proposition: Nicole Dupre died leaving behind a bestselling novel and an incomplete sequel, and the family need someone to finish it. Bridget is just thankful to have her foot in the publishing door. But as she gets to know Nicole’s grieving family, and the woman behind the writing, Bridget’s priorities begin to change.

I love Paige Toon books and I always look forward to that time of year when she will be releasing another one. This was no exception.

This story follows Bridget, a travel journalist, who has written a small amount in the past but wants to make the move tom becoming a full time writer. She is struggling to get anything major published so is writing a relationship blog, when she gets offered the opportunity to ghostwrite for Nicki, who tragically died suddenly after writing her first book and wasn't able to finish the sequel, she is unsure at first (she is not sure this will be the best way of her getting into writing) but with a little encouragement agrees to the job.

Bridget is determined to continue with her blog, to find her ex boyfriends to ask for the piece of her heart back in order for her to commit fully and be able to move on from them. This has taken her over the world so far and she has a few other to visit in the U.K. Being Nicki's ghostwriter takes her to Cornwall and working in the house with the recently widowed Charlie and his young daughter April.

Bridget is still with her partner Elliot that she reconnected with when in Australia searching for long lost ex's, this a long distance relationship but she is sure that once she has got all the pieces of her heart back again she can begin a new live with him.

This story is predictable but it is lovely and has so much emotion in it. I really was captured from the beginning and felt I had a connection with the characters. I loved all the settings in the book and most of the characters, I wasn't too fond of Kate or Valerie. If you love Paige Toon you will love this addition to her novels, this is going to be one that I recommend this summer to everyone. It truly is a wonderful read, one that has become a firm favourite on my bookshelf. Well done Paige, you have done it again!

The Reading Group: January by Della Parker

The Reading Group: JanuaryThe Reading Group: January by Della Parker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Anne-Marie has always considered herself a bit of a matchmaker - never mind that she's only got one real success under her belt. And this year she's determined to up her game: Little Sanderton's singles could certainly benefit from her expertise! But while Anne Marie thinks she knows what's best for everyone else, her own life couldn't be less of a fairytale romance. Between looking after her cranky father and running her own business, she doesn't have time for a relationship. Her friends in the Reading Group know better though: after all, love can be found in the most unexpected of places . .

This is the second installment by Della Parker. The Reading Group is a fun new series, where we follow the lives of those in the reading group. Each month they choose a book and we delve into one of the members lives. This month was the turn of Anne - Marie, she believes after running a successful cleaning business, she could be just as good as match making. She recently set a friend up and now they are sending out their wedding invites! After a dinner party of singles, she thinks perhaps it isn't a great idea, especially when she ends up getting unwanted attention herself.

I really enjoyed this installment and I am very much looking forward the February edition. These are light-hearted, easy going books and if you are looking for a little romance to get you though the month then I suggest picking these up. Although this is only the second one I have read I would recommend this series to busy people who don't have too much time to dedicate to reading.

Castaway in the Caribbean by Janice Horton

Castaway in the CaribbeanCastaway in the Caribbean by Janice Horton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vacationing on the beautiful Caribbean island of Antigua, Janey Sinclair is persuaded by her magazine editor boss to do a quick island hop in order to supervise an impromptu photo-shoot for the front cover. With no flights immediately available, Janey is directed to the harbour. Captain Travis Mathews hates tourists, although he’s not above making a bit of money off a prissy and sharp tongued young British girl when she’s desperate to get to the neighbouring island of Tortola.

After striking a deal, they set off together in Travis’s weather-beaten old boat. When the vessel comes to a sudden full stop in the sea, the mismatched pair end up as castaways on an uninhabited island. In this fast moving romantic adventure about a vacation that turns into a tropical nightmare there’s more fun than you’ll find in any travel brochure.

This book sounded just like my thing, I love travelling and especially enjoy being in the Caribbean, this is an area of the world I have managed to make very familiar. One of my favourite islands is Tortola, so for this to feature in the book made me excited.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, it was pacy and the story line interested me. We are on holiday with Janey and her boyfriend. They feel like they are miles away from anyone and are enjoying every minute of it. Janey works for an editor in Scotland and so when she gets a call from her boss asking her to leave Antigua and pop over to Tortola to help out with a photo shoot, Janey looks at it as a chance to shine and show her boss what she is made of. Her boyfriend is less impress after just proposing and her contemplating to leave.

Getting to Tortola isn't as easy as it should be, with no flights running, her only option is to hire a boat. This is where she meets Travis, Janey pays over the odds for Travis to take her, but she feels like she has little choice. Unfortunately not everything goes to plan .

Like I said I really enjoyed the first part of the book, it kept my interest and I really wanted to know what was going to happen, however just over half way though I felt the story was a little dragged out and some of the scenarios were a little far fetched. I would have given the book 3.5* but have rounded this up to 4*, I thought that it could have been cut a little shorter, saying this, it didn't make it any less enjoyable and I am glad I had the opportunity to read and review it.

If you enjoy books set somewhere exotic and are a bit of fun this is a perfect read for you, perhaps on the beach with a cocktail in hand?

The Gift - Karli Perrin

The GiftThe Gift by Karli Perrin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was the weekend before Christmas and the whole world was on countdown.
Except for me.
Last Christmas, I met a boy.
Last Christmas, we made a pact.
Christmas would never be the same.
Life would never be the same...

This is an incredibly short story, that I read in about 20 minutes, so perfect for a short lunchtime break or commute.

This is Imogen and Blake, they meet on the run up to Christmas in an unusual situation and take a shine to each other.

My only negative of this short story is the reference to most of the dialogue between the two characters being in code. I felt this point was laboured quite a lot.

The description of Blake makes you want your own Blake this Christmas.

This short story is flirty and fun. This is the first time I have read a story by Perrin, however on the strength if this I would read others of her books.

This is currently free on Amazon and it is a great free find. If you have not downloaded this yet, go grab yourself a copy!

Upside Down - Lia Riley

Published 5th August ebook

Blurb:

If you never get lost, you'll never be found…

Twenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying goodbye to painful memories and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. For the next six months, she'll pretend to be a carefree exchange student.

She’ll try to forget about the mistake under the boardwalk and the terrifying moments of panic and OCD. Everything is going to plan until she meets a surly surfer with hypnotic green eyes, and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he slunk back to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defences. He's never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. A single semester abroad won't cover something this serious. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once in a lifetime . . . or if they were meant to live a world apart.

Upside Down by debut author, Lia Riley is a bright new adult novel which tells the story of 21 year old Natalia Stolfi who embarks on a journey to Australia in order to escape from her turbulent life back home. Despite her OCD, there are some things that cannot be controlled. Natalia meets Bran and the two go on to save one another in ways which neither could possibly have imagined.

This is the first novel in a brilliant new series which deals with everyday issues in extraordinary ways. We really hope that you enjoy the book as much as we do.

Praise for Upside Down:

'Upside Down gave me all the feels. Romantic and poignant, the journey of love and acceptance lingers long after the book is closed' Jennifer L. Armentrout/J. Lynn, # 1 New York Times bestselling author

Review:

I don’t read many New Adult titles, so when I was offered Upside Down by debut author Lia Riley I thought this would be a good one to get started with.

Talia is a twenty one year old exchange student on her way to Australia for six months. It’s not long that she is there and meets surfer hunk Bran.

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, learning about the main character Talia, I enjoyed reading about her family and the issues she was trying to overcome. However little more than at the second chapter we were in Australia, this to me happened too quick; we were suddenly introduced to the love interest and I felt there was no time to just ‘enjoy’ the surroundings.

I thought I was really going to enjoy this story, having been to Australia myself I felt I would be able to connect to the surroundings and dream about being back there again. Unfortunately this didn’t happen, I didn’t feel like I was hooked in this story and I didn’t feel like I connected with any of the characters either. This made the book a little of a struggle for me to read as I felt I had to force myself.

The way the story is written is good, each chapter we come across one of the characters and what is going on through their point of view. I did like the way that this was set out, and it made it easy to follow.

Bran is the love interest in the story and I found him a little unlikable. He spent most of his time being a typical boy; however I felt he didn’t come across too well. During his chapters when I learnt more about him, my opinion of him never improved.

Both of the main characters have their own issues and problems that they are trying to overcome and find each other in the process. Bran tries to ignore his feelings but it is inevitable that they should be together.

The actual storyline was O.K, there were times when I felt the reason she was in Australia was missed...I wasn’t actually sure what she was studying until half way through the book. I would say this book relies heavily on the romance which is great if that is what you are looking for. This book is definitely a romantic emotional rollercoaster.

Overall the story was O.K, I didn’t think it grabbed me and at times I found it hard to want to read it as I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. The story has been written well and if you love New Adult Romance, I am sure you will love it. Personally it just wasn’t for me, which is a shame as I really wanted to like it.

Extract:

Hi and thanks for welcoming me to your blog as part of the Coco Pinchard, The Consequences of Love and Sex blog tour!

For today’s stop I’d like to share with you an extract from the book, where Coco Pinchard tells her literary agent Angie Langford that she is pregnant… at 44…

Monday 6th February

I left Adam this morning uploading his CV to job search sites, and took the tube over to see my literary agent Angie. She has finally finished re-modelling her house, a beautiful four-storey home in a quiet, elegant terrace in Chiswick. She opened the door wearing pyjamas, holding a cup of coffee, with a cigarette dangling from the corner of her mouth.

‘Hi Angie… We have got a meeting today?’

‘Course Cokes,’ she said using the free side of her mouth. ‘This is the joy of working from home: you only need to get dressed up when it’s something important.’

I wiped my feet and gave her a look.

‘Of course love, you’re important. But you’re a mate too,’ she said.

She gave me a tour of the finished house. The basement has been excavated, and she now has a home cinema, underground parking, and her own spa with a jacuzzi. We finished the tour at the swimming pool. The huge expanse of water rippled softy under a vaulted sandstone ceiling. The bottom of the pool was tiled with a mosaic of her family.

‘I didn’t bank on the rippling water making me look so fat,’ she said, as we peered down at the bizarre Disney-esque cartoon mosaic of Angie, her fifth husband Mark, and her kids.

‘Course the kids all wanted to include their fathers in the mosaic, but why would I want to go for a swim with those bastards every morning?’ Angie is a proud four-by-four-er. Four kids by four different

fathers. I often wonder if it’s her skill as a literary agent that has landed her this luxurious lifestyle, or her skill at negotiating a divorce settlement.

We came up to Angie’s office via a sweeping staircase. The walls were adorned with photos of her kids, every Madonna concert she’s been to and, I was flattered to see, a big poster of my proudest triumph, ‘Chasing Diana Spencer: The Musical’, which was adapted from my novel of the same name.

Angie’s new office was lined with bookshelves containing the work of all her authors. I spied Recherche Lady Di, the best-selling French edition of Chasing Diana Spencer. It gave me a thrill to be getting back to work again after a few months away from it all. I took a squashy chair in front of her desk. Angie lit a cigarette and sat opposite. Behind her was a beautiful view of rooftops and the Thames in the distance.

‘What happened to your old assistant?’ I asked.

‘Brenda took me to a tribunal,’ said Angie.

‘That’s a shame, what happened?’

‘You know when they dug out my basement, they found that Roman settlement and the plague pit?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Brenda started taking tea down to the builders, but the daft cow didn’t wear a facemask. She caught the bubonic plague.’

‘That’s terrible.’

‘Oh, it’s nothing these days, Cokes. She had to take a course of antibiotics, and she was fine. But the cow got greedy and wanted more than statutory sick pay. I said to her, ‘Did they get statutory sick pay in 1665? No they bloody didn’t. They all died.’’

‘And what did she say?’

‘Well she repeated that at the tribunal, and it cost me a bloody fortune. So for now Chloe is working for me.’ Angie’s daughter Chloe came in with two coffees.

‘Right,’ she said composing herself. ‘I’ve got a release date for

Agent Fergie. Your publisher, The House of Randoms, is looking at April 16th, so we really need to start things moving.’

‘There’s just one other thing,’ I said. ‘I’m pregnant. I’m going to have a baby in August.’

‘Bloody hell!’ said Angie. She sat back and puffed on her cigarette, then as an afterthought waved the smoke away from me. ‘You know, that could be a brilliant promotion angle. Old mum.’

‘Old mum?’

‘Have you got an ultrasound?’ I started to get it out of my coat.

‘No give it to Chloe to scan. It would be good to have on record if the press need it. This is such good news Coco! We could get Heat magazine to do a folic acid themed, ‘What’s in your fridge?’ You could recommend stretch mark cream in Boots Magazine. We could pitch something to Grazia or Cosmo about female incontinence – Ulrika Johnson has paved the way with that one. It’s perfect! Your readership is women over thirty five – and of course poofters. Could we do a mum and son thing in Gaytimes? Rosencrantz topless, and you in maternity gear?’

‘Hey! Angie!’

‘What?’

‘I’ve just told you I’m pregnant.’

‘I heard you love.’

‘And what do normal people say in response?’

Angie looked confused. ‘Um. Whose is it?’

I shook my head.

‘Are you gonna to keep it?’ Then it dawned on her. ‘Shit, congratulations Cokes.’

‘Thank you.’

I showed her my scan and she became human again. She even asked if I wanted to be put in touch with her Harley Street gynaecologist.

‘He’s great,’ she said. ‘Got me into a private hospital that lets you smoke. I could choose when I had my Caesarean, and they did a bit

of liposuction at the same time.’

I lied and said I’d think about it.

‘Well when you get the next bit of your advance through you can afford it love.’

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

'Kate has given up on love—at least for herself. She is both blessed and cursed with the ability to sense a romantic connection between two people—a gift that her family passed down for generations. When Kate launches her own matchmaking company, Kinnection, with her two best friends in a cozy New York town, she has to put aside her own romantic disasters to make her business a success.

But when a furious man stalks into her office and accuses her business of being a scam, Kate is given the ultimate challenge to prove herself. Slade puts himself in her hands and asks Kate to find him love. Enraged at his arrogance but stubbornly eager to prove herself, Kate agrees, dedicating herself to the journey of finding him love... only to find herself falling for him along the way.'

Searching for Someday is the first in the searching for series.

I have heard that Probst is known for her very steamy reads, I was a little apprehensive about reading this book as I am not a fan of erotica novels. This book however I did not get this ‘erotica’ feeling, there was not a lot of steam in it and for me that was perfect!

Kate is a successful business woman who has her own match making agency. This match making agency is one with a difference, Kate has the ability to tell if the person you are with is your soul mate.

Slade is one of the top divorce lawyers of the state and is a little bit of a protective brother. His sister is using Kate’s agency to find herself a partner, Slade however wants to identify to his sister that the company is a fraud and sets out to prove it. In order to do this he decides to register with Kinnections as a client to show her the company is a bit of a joke.

Searching for Someday is an easy going read, if you are looking for a deep big plot this is not for you. If you are looking for a cute and fun romance this hits the nail on the head. It is perfect for a holiday; the story is told in two perspectives which makes it really nice for reading. The only negative I would have about this book is that I thought it took a while to build the tension in the beginning, but then I found it to be at a good pace.

I particularly enjoyed the magic element of the story, this to make made it different and stand out from other books in this type of genre. After reading this I would definitely be interested in reading the others in this series.

I would like to thank the publisher for sending me this in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Autumn 1970

Hale’s lungs were tight as he gripped his duffel in one hand and held his uniform over his shoulder with the other. He flew up the steps of the small fishing cottage that his wife was renting from the Shelby family and arrived on the wide porch. He had imagined the moment he’d see her so many times that he felt like he was performing a play. He dropped the duffel right there and knocked on the screen door. Why was he knocking? She knew he was coming. He threw the door open and walked into the small entry. It opened into the family room. He wiped his feet while he scanned the space. “April!”

His heart beat fast and heavy. Yes, he was home under difficult circumstances. Hale’s wife was having difficulty coping with the stillbirth of their daughter. He was worried for her and knew if his skipper granted hardship leave that things must be bad. Yet he was determined, sure as he had finally arrived at the Outer Banks, he was confident that he could make her well. He just needed to see her, to hold her, to tell her everything was going to be okay.

The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight” was playing on the radio. The tune brought a smile to his face. He rushed down the hallway and poked his head into two bedrooms and a bathroom before finding the room April had been using. He tucked his naval uniform into the closet, went back to the kitchen, and turned off the radio, straining to hear any noise that might signal April’s location. He went back outside, inhaling the salty air.

Where was she? He leapt off the porch and crossed the gravelly lane called Beach Road stepping onto the sand, craning his neck to catch a glimpse of her. A seagull clipped Hale’s head as it landed off to the side then flipped a whitefish into its mouth. As far as he could

see, the beach was empty, yet he thought he should walk it, search for April. He didn’t know which direction she would have walked, but he started out anyway.

Heading south, a flock of black birds escorted him from above. Scores of them moved together like one great wing flapping in the wind. The whoosh of their collective descent was punctuated by their coarse, throaty screams.

The sand worked into Hale’s shoes, each particle stabbing at the skin below his ankles. He pushed one shoe off and then the other, leaving them near a smattering of driftwood that had been pushed ashore by high tide. The birds dropped, their calls growing louder, drowning out the surf. One by one the black skimmers rained from the sky like bombs, their red beaks bright against the gray sky that had crept in with Hale’s arrival. Some of the birds landed in the shoals and poked and prodded at the sand.

He came upon the largest cluster of birds, the beige sand peeking out in small patches among the blackness, and his eye went to a different form, a woman sitting rod straight, motionless in the center of the black avian shroud. Her blonde hair whipped in the wind like the sea grass at his feet. Hale stopped. His heart thumped. April. He willed himself to breathe, to move toward her. He’d never seen such a sight, the way she seemed partly born of the sand, partly able to sprout wings and fly away.

“April!” he said, waving even though her back was to him.

She did not respond. He called again, his words turned back to him by the stiff ocean gales. He jogged toward her, weaving in between napping skimmers, hopping over those that were too busy eating to move out of his way.

When he had nearly reached April, he halted again. He suddenly felt nervous about his excitement; he felt her sadness as though they shared the same soul. He’d never seen such a stunning sight in his life. Her elegance was apparent even sitting on a beach, in the middle of birds. She turned her head slightly, her profile facing him. His stomach flipped. Oh my God, is she beautiful. The wind tossed her hair, making her appear as though she were posing for a magazine shoot.

Even from a distance, even from the side, he thought he could see the sparkle of her blue eyes. The way they were set, wide on her face, made it seem as though he saw something slightly different every time he looked at her, something more, something alluring, hypnotizing. Those eyes.

There was no woman more captivating, he was sure. Or more lonely. Her sadness seemed to leap over the sand to him, to well up from the soles of his feet, filling him, squeezing the breath from his suddenly heavy lungs. If he felt this, then her pain must be far greater, her emptiness more profound. He’d helped her create life, but he hadn’t been there when it ended.

He moved closer to her, yelling her name again. She sat, splashed by the surf, her shorts and sleeveless t-shirt clinging to her body. Her legs were pretzeled beneath her, her arms outstretched, resting on her knees, her palms turned skyward. Seaweed had wrapped

around her fingers, dangling from them, the ends washing around her with the surf. She appeared fragile, even more so than the year before.

He finally reached her and dropped to his knees. Her eyes met his and he saw a spark in her expression, as though it took her a few heartbeats to realize who he was. She threw her ice-cold arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. Oh, God. The thrill he felt to hold her again shocked him, and the worry crashed away like a spent wave.

He kissed her cheeks and forehead and chin then ran his hands over her arms. “What are you doing out here like this? It’s so cold.” Hale didn’t wait for answers. He gathered her in his arms.

She drew back. “Wait.”

His chest heaved, wanting to wrap her up tight. He leaned in, and she put her hand against his chest, stopping him.

“It’s you, it’s you, it’s you.” Her gaze penetrated his, her words were thin against the noisy surf. Her smile turned electric. He was struck by the thought that his wife was all right, that she had weathered the stillbirth better than he’d been told. He exhaled, not realizing he’d been holding his breath.

Inches apart, they stared at each other. He grabbed her hands as a wave broke, drenching them. The tension dissolved and they laughed, falling into each other, running their hands over every bit of skin they could reach, marveling like they had discovered the lost tombs of Egypt.

“Let’s go.” He squeezed her hands.

She nodded and wrapped her arms around his neck. He stood and she latched her legs around his waist.

Hale moved down the beach, holding her. His excitement, the love he felt for her, spread throughout his body as she pressed her hips into him. He threaded his way toward the cottage, disturbing slumbering birds, whispering to April that all would be well now that he was back, that he would take away the hurt and make everything perfect again.

And as he headed back to the cottage, April nuzzled into him. “I love you, I love you,” she said, her lips moving against his neck, thrilling him. It had been nearly a year since he’d pulled April from the chilled water of the Albemarle Sound, since he had rescued her body and she had rescued his heart. Last year, back home on leave, he’d felt as though somehow he was starting over again, but had been lost, needing to find her as much as she had needed to be found.

She squeezed her legs tighter, finding his lips with hers. He stopped walking and set her down, continuing the kiss.

She pulled away, touching his arms, his chest, his cheeks, her eyes filled with tears. “You’re here, you’re here, you’re here. I can’t even believe it,” she said.

Hale dug his hands into her hair. “You’re okay?” After seeing her so solemn at the edge of the surf, he hadn’t expected her to be gleeful, as though his presence had snapped her awareness to on. She kissed him again.

Hale laughed, talking into her kiss. “Thank God.” He laid his forehead on hers.

She nodded, grabbing his backside, pulling him to her. “Let’s make love. Right here.”

His excitement grew, but in the back of his mind, even with this thrilling greeting, he wasn’t sure they should make love. Had he returned from Vietnam under any other circumstances, he wouldn’t have hesitated. But this was different.

He traced his finger over her lips. He had forgotten just how tall she was until she stood there in front of him. She went up on her toes and kissed him. “Please, Hale. Please. I need you. Please. You’re not going to make me wait? Not after being gone so long. Don’t tease me like this.” She played with the hair at the nape of his neck with one hand and moved her other hand between his legs.

She sat down, pulling him onto the sand with her. “No one’s here. Just us.” She leaned back on her elbows, her eyes full of flirty mischief.

He looked around as he knelt between her legs, caressing her knees, her thighs. “But what about—”

“It’s okay. It’s fine. I am.”

Hale licked his lips. “You’re sure? Usually, I like to woo you first. At least a little, if you recall.”

April threw her head back. “You call fixing my roof an exercise in wooing? No roof to fix here.” She met his gaze again, flinty desire making his stomach flip.

“Consider me wooed, my love,” she said.

Hale shook his head, his cheeks hurting from his wide grin. He held up his finger. “Be serious, for just one second.”

“Oh, serious Hale.” She rolled her eyes, chuckling.

He scoffed at her mocking, their little joke. She seemed like herself. Perhaps she was stronger than everyone thought she was. He finally let the full force of joy and lust hit him. “There’s no one like you, April Abercrombie. No one in the world.”

She sat up and laced her hands around his neck, pulling him down on top of her. His lips met hers. He wanted to take his time and explore her body, take in every bit of her with his eyes, with his fingers, so he could savor the experience once he was back overseas. But even as he kissed her, she was fumbling with the button on his jeans and shimmying out of her shorts. She’s okay, Hale thought, relief rushing through him. Her passion and desire for him nearly made him laugh out loud. He’d been so afraid for her, worried that he wouldn’t know how to talk to her. But here she was, overwhelming him with her excitement, with her resilience.

“Please. I just want you close to me.” She wrapped her hand around him, stroking, making him gasp. She was no longer just part of a scene in his memory. She opened a door that he was free to run through. He kissed her neck, tasting the salt that had dried there. She pushed his pants off and grasped his ass.

He wanted to savor every moment, to slow down time. They pushed against each other, the tingling lit through him like fire, her arousal fueling his. His heartbeat sped up making him think he couldn’t slow things down.

She put her hand on his shoulder, shifting her weight so that she could straddle him. She pulled off his shirt and he leaned back. She bit his ear then kissed him from his neck to his shoulder, onto his chest and belly before taking him into her mouth. “Oh God. April.”

She kissed her way back up his body, every bit of him shuddering as she slipped into his lap. The loose neckline of her t-shirt fell to the side. He kissed her collarbone and ran his hands around her back, unhooking her bra as she moved against him. He lifted her shirt over her head, flung the bra to the side and kissed her breasts. She grasped him at the back of the neck and paused before wrapping her hand around him. She lifted onto her knees and guided him inside her. Hale gripped her hips.

His vision blurred as the warmth of her body around his shocked him. She rose up and down and in a few moments he was close to the end. She dropped her head back, her hair swinging behind her. He pulled her to him, wanting to feel her against his chest. With her in his lap, her arms and legs clamped around him, holding him so tight he could barely find his breath, they finished.

Breathing hard, Hale turned April onto her back, her body nestled under him as though they’d never been apart.

The happiness. It was alive in him, coursing through his veins. His eyes burned. Warm tears slid down his face onto her cheek. He watched her heaving breath settle into unison with his, her face placid with her eyes shut, lips slightly parted. He brushed her hair from her face.

Having her under him, their hearts and bodies joined in this moment of sheer release was what he’d imagined the entire time he was in Vietnam. And best of all, she was okay. He couldn’t believe it, but they had all been wrong about April. She was fine. Thank you, God.

Guest Post:

Love, Romance, and a Little Bit of Strife… That’s what romance novels are made of.

Okay, so I’ve always been a fan of sappy romantic comedies. I used to binge on romance novels. And, I’ve adored history since I first noticed my parents’ bookshelves bursting with thick hardbacks; I love the dark, digging into the nitty-gritty details of facts and research. But for some reason I’d never merged romance and history into my writing—well, not until a little over a year ago.

I was invited to contribute a novella to a romance anthology called Bliss. Each author would contribute a story that was set in the same house on the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. But, each story would be set in a different era. I’d never written romance before, although I’d say that some of my novels definitely had elements of “love” woven into them.

Could I do it? Did I want to? Well, I gave it a shot and fell madly in love with writing love. My first draft of Home Again (book one in the Endless Love series) was bulky even in its novella length. My editor, Sue, sent the manuscript back to me with the note “get rid of nearly everyone and everything that is not related to the main characters falling in love.”

Whaaat? Well, okay, I thought. Then what? I was used to shaping and molding 120,000 word historical novels that embodied entire worlds for each character including the secondary ones. I didn’t even know what she meant—how could there be a story without all that other stuff unrelated to falling in love? I panicked. I went for a cleansing walk. And, I felt a calm settle over me as my mind unwound and I realized what she meant. My mind traipsed back through all the books I’d read, the movies I’d seen, my own experiences with falling in love. It was simple and clear—when people are falling in love, there IS nothing else in life for them.

What fun it became to craft this first novella. These characters had lives, of course. Set in 1969 in a place in that which I was unfamiliar, I still needed to do my trusty research. I still needed to build atmosphere and tone into each scene, and my characters still needed something to do. I felt such freedom in crafting a story that always needed to circle back to just two people—falling in love, encountering obstacles, the passion, the worry if they should really be together… the water, the warm North Carolina air, Vietnam, Woodstock, April and Hale—always going back to them.

Well, I wrote the novella, it sits among its sibling novellas in Bliss and it also went into the world on its own, being named a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. It’s been rewarding. But, the real reward has been that I fell in love with April and Hale and I knew their story would not end with that short, but lovely first tale. I’ve written the next chapters of their lives in the novel, Return to Love.

This young couple is separated by war and though the book doesn’t cover them first meeting (that’s in the novella), their love is always fresh and new because each time

they come back together when Hale is on leave, they find familiarity in their embrace, in their touch, in each kiss, but there is an ocean of emotional distance to cross each time. Yes, this couple fascinates me. Writing light, writing romance is just as fulfilling as the heavier, “deeper,” historical fiction stuff. I just hope that readers find April and Hale as fun and captivating as I do.

Blue - Lisa Glass

BlueBlue by Lisa Glass
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Surfing is sixteen-year-old Iris’s world, and when the ultra-talented Zeke walks into her life, it soon becomes her passion.

Over one amazing summer, as she is drawn into his sphere, she experiences love, new friendships, but also loss, with an intensity she never dreamed of.

But is Zeke all he seems? What hides beneath his glamorous and mysterious past? When Iris decides to try for her own surfing success, just as her ex-boyfriend comes back into her life, she will test her talent, and her feelings for Zeke, to the limit…

Let me say what a beautiful cover this is! It really drew me into this book before I had even started! It made me want to be where ever the book was set on the beach, looking at that beautiful sunset and to finish it off a great looking guy on the cover!

Blue is set down in Cornwall, this is a place close to my heart as I spent most of my childhood summers there visiting grandparents, so I felt that straight away I had a loose connection with the book, which was an instant positive for me. I also loved the fact that it was set in the U.K as so many books of this style are set abroad, which don’t get me wrong is lovely! But they often make everything seem out of reach, this however being on my door step made me realise that some beautiful and unusual moments can happen at home, which I think if I was a teenager this would appeal to me.

The theme of the book was unlike anything I have read before and to be honest I have not been interested in reading about surfers and stuff, however I am so glad that I took the opportunity to read this book. I enjoyed it immensely and although I didn’t think it was going to be my cup of tea, I am so glad it changed my mind.

To be honest when reading the beginning of the story I thought, so this is another girl meets boy romantic story, I could not have been more wrong, there were twists and turns in the story that I never saw coming, which kept the spark of the book alive. I thought the pace of the story was brilliant – I couldn’t believe how quick I read the book.

The characters were great in the story, all were developed well and I loved the side line story with Wes, I thought that opinions were expressed well, I thought that Zeke was an absolute sweety, this part of his character developed more the further in the story you became. I was shocked by Daniel on more than one occasion and I loved how Iris was not your typical surfer.

I found that this book took me on a journey of different emotions. I loved the kindness and sadness I felt with nanna, the anger I felt with Daniel and the love I felt with Zeke. This is a perfect all round novel that will capture all your emotions. It is a brilliant for a beach read or even for a rainy day, when I read it – I wanted to be transported to somewhere lovely and this book did that for me.

This is one of those books that when you pick it up, you know instantly you are going to finish it in record time as it is such an easy read and addictive, I was so pleased that I had found a book that made me feel like this, lately I have struggled to get into books so this was a joy to read. I was a little sad when it was drawing to a close as I enjoyed it so much. Who knows though? Maybe there will be a sequel at some time? I do hope so!

I would like to thank the publisher for sending me this in exchange for an honest review.

Guest post - Character post of Steve Vee:

Well Hello!

I’m Stevie Vee, described as Scotland’s answer to Jon Bon Jovi – or at least I was until I died suddenly at the age of 29….

Julie has allowed me to introduce myself to you guys – well, I have a way with the ladies, if you know what I mean!

My band “Legend” were going places. We had adoring fans and groupies. Gorgeous girls gazing at us.

Even some of the blokes come to think of it. Wow, you should’ve seen the talent that would rock up to our gigs – long hair, long legs - and that was just the guys!

There was one beautiful girl in particular – no, I’m not going there. Best forgotten.

All I wanted to do was sing, write music and be on stage. It’s where I felt I belonged. I suppose it felt like me and the other guys in the band would go on forever.

Yeah well. That didn’t exactly go according to plan, did it? All my hopes and dreams up in smoke.

I was going to say at least I’ve still got my health, but that’s not true is it? Good job I’ve still got my sense of humour.

I don’t have the lights, the adoration or the crowds any more but my voice is still as spine-tingling as ever, even if I say so myself.

I’m still a looker too, in a pale ghostly rocker kind of way! It’s just a pity there’s no-one else around to hear me belting out those classic rock anthems.

Oh well, better get back to composing a new ballad.

When you’re a ghostly rock singer, there isn’t a lot else to think about – except how I came to meet my end so suspiciously…

Rock on guys!

About the Author:

Julie Shackman

I trained as a journalist but writing romance has always been a dream of mine. When I’ve not got my head in a book or drafting one, I write verses and captions for greetings card companies. Writing at home seems to be incredibly difficult for me – I usually require coffee, music and noise.

“Rock My World” is my first contemporary romance novel . I have just finished writing my second novel and am polishing that at the moment whilst beginning to do some research for my third. These are also contemporary romances with a good dose of humour (hopefully!). I’m married, have two sons and live in Scotland.
